about this trail

Tanner's Way Trail

Tanner’s Way is a 1.7-mile one-way trail connecting the North Fork area to Big Sky Town Center. Built by Big Sky’s Trail Dogs (the local chapter of SWMMBA) and now part of the BSCO trail system, this route reflects true community collaboration.

The trail winds across private land and exists thanks to generous land use agreements from property owners, fundraising efforts by Trail Dogs, and broad support from the Big Sky community. It offers beginner-friendly climbing for mountain bikers, followed by a moderate descent, making it a strong connector for riders traveling between neighborhoods and Town Center.

Tanner’s Way crosses several equestrian trails. Please ride slowly and remain alert at all crossings. Yield to horses and follow posted signage to ensure safety for all users.

The trail is open year-round but ungroomed in winter and may be icy. Snowshoes or traction devices are recommended during snowy conditions.

More Trail Details

Tanner’s Way represents a strong partnership between:

  • Private landowners
  • Trail Dogs / SWMMBA
  • Big Sky Community Organization
  • The broader Big Sky community

Because the trail crosses private land and equestrian routes, users must:

  • Yield to horses
  • Slow down at trail crossings
  • Respect landowner access agreements
  • Stay on designated trail

Winter conditions can create icy sections. Snowshoes or traction gear are recommended.

Maintained as part of the BSCO trail network, Tanner’s Way strengthens neighborhood-to-Town Center connectivity and reflects Big Sky’s collaborative approach to building recreation access.
