about this trail

Ousel Falls Trail

Ousel Falls Trail connects Big Sky Town Center to one of the community’s most iconic natural landmarks — Ousel Falls Park.

This 1.6-mile round-trip trail descends gently into the South Fork ravine, crossing over the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River before arriving at the impressive 100-foot waterfall.

Named after the Ousel Bird (Cinclus mexicanus), more commonly known as the American Dipper, the trail offers more than just a scenic destination. Interpretive signage and brochures available at the trailhead provide insight into the area’s ecology, wildlife, and watershed.

Early summer is especially memorable along this trail. Wildflowers line the path, snowmelt fuels a powerful waterfall display, and wildlife sightings — including American Dippers moving in and out of the river — are common. Spring runoff makes the falls particularly dramatic.

Ousel Falls is a favorite for both locals and visitors from around the world. While accessible and family-friendly, this is active wildlife habitat. Visitors are encouraged to carry bear spray and remain aware of surroundings. (Grizzly activity has been documented in the area.)

The trail is ungroomed in winter and can become icy. Snowshoes or traction devices are recommended during snowy or icy conditions.

Bridge Plaques at Ousel Falls

As you cross the second bridge along Ousel Falls Trail, you’ll notice small commemorative plaques honoring individuals, families, and businesses who have chosen to give back to Big Sky. These bridge plaques are part of BSCO’s Naming Opportunities program and represent lasting investments in the trails and open spaces we all enjoy.

For a $500 tax-deductible donation, community members can sponsor a custom plaque on the Ousel Falls bridge. Each contribution directly supports the maintenance and expansion of Big Sky’s trail system — creating both a personal legacy and a shared community impact.
