Mud Creek Trail
Mud Creek Trail is a 3-mile moderate loop located approximately one mile south of Big Sky off U.S. Highway 191. Popular with mountain bikers and winter fat bikers, this trail offers a steady 450-foot climb followed by a fast, flowing descent featuring berms and terrain features.
The loop is designed to be ridden counter-clockwise, with the first 1.5 miles serving as a gradual climbing trail before transitioning into a downhill-focused descent. The climbing portion is considered beginner-friendly, while the descent moves into the intermediate range due to speed, banked turns, and trail features.
Hikers are permitted on Mud Creek, but are strongly encouraged to use the climbing trail for both ascent and descent to avoid conflicts with downhill riders. Clear signage marks the transition point where the trail shifts to recommended downhill traffic only.
Originally built in 2019 by Terraflow Trail Systems through private funding, the trail system officially became part of the BSCO network in 2021 and returned to its historical name, Mud Creek. Today, it remains one of the most accessible and popular bike loops in the Big Sky area.

More Trail Details
Mud Creek’s design balances accessibility with progression. Riders new to downhill flow trails can climb the loop and return the same way on the climbing trail if they prefer to avoid the descent.
Expect:
- Smooth climbing grades
- Bermed corners
- Rolling terrain features
- Moderate downhill speeds
During winter, the trail is frequently used by fat bikers and snowshoers. Conditions vary depending on snowfall and traffic.
An informational kiosk and updated trail signage have been installed by BSCO to improve wayfinding and user safety. Plans include additional user amenities such as bear-proof waste receptacles.
Maintained by Big Sky Community Organization (BSCO), Mud Creek enhances bike-accessible recreation while expanding trail connectivity in the Gallatin Canyon corridor.
