about this trail

Beehive Basin Trail

Beehive Basin is one of the most beloved trails in Big Sky, Montana — offering sweeping alpine scenery, dramatic granite cliffs, and a crystal-clear mountain lake at over 9,000 feet.

This moderate 7.2-mile out-and-back trail climbs through forest, open meadows, and wildflower fields before reaching a stunning glacial cirque basin. The trail begins at approximately 7,500 feet and gains roughly 1,700 feet in elevation as it ascends toward the basin. Early sections wind through grassy meadows and forest before gradually climbing into more open alpine terrain. At one mile, you’ll reach a signed T-junction — stay left to remain on Beehive Basin Trail.

Wildlife is frequently present in this area, including elk, moose, and bear. Beehive Basin and the RT & Ralph’s Preserve are jointly managed by Big Sky Community Organization (BSCO) and the U.S. Forest Service. This is a true alpine experience — come prepared for changing weather, limited shade at higher elevations, and high use during peak months.

More Trail Details

As you approach the basin, you’ll cross creeks and open grassy meadows framed by towering granite cliffs. The alpine lake near the top offers dramatic views and a peaceful resting point before returning along the same route.

Because of its popularity and limited parking, Beehive Basin is one of the most heavily used trails in Big Sky. Practicing trail etiquette, packing out waste, and respecting wildlife helps preserve this landscape for everyone.

Fat bike, snowshoe, and backcountry ski rentals are available at local outdoor retailers including Gallatin Alpine Sports, Grizzly Outfitters, and East Slope Outdoors.

Beehive Basin Trail reflects BSCO’s commitment to stewarding high-use, high-impact recreation areas while preserving the natural character of Big Sky.
