Matthews Trail
Matthew’s Trail is a seasonal, moderate trail in Big Sky created to honor the life of Matthew Clemson, whose love for skiing, hiking, climbing, and mountain adventure left a lasting mark on this community.
Located on the eastern side of Lone Mountain Trail near the Cascade Chairlift, this trail reflects Matthew’s adventurous spirit and his deep connection to Big Sky’s forests, mountains, and powder days. Whether you’re hiking, running, or biking, Matthew’s Trail offers a space to move, reflect, and experience the landscape he loved.
The project broke ground in August 2023 and was fully funded by the Clemson family, friends, and generous community members in Big Sky and beyond. Following contributions — including proceeds from the Big Sky Biggie race — this trail now stands as a lasting tribute built by and for the community.
Matthew is lovingly remembered by his parents, Stephanie and Pete, and his sister, Anna. This trail invites all who use it to celebrate adventure, resilience, and connection to the outdoors.

More Trail Details
Matthew’s Trail is part of BSCO’s broader effort to expand hiking, biking, and walking opportunities throughout Big Sky while honoring meaningful community stories.
This trail serves as both recreation space and remembrance — a place where community members can experience the same sense of joy and adventure that Matthew found outdoors.
We invite visitors to explore the trail and share their experiences responsibly, continuing the spirit of connection that brought this project to life.
Maintained by Big Sky Community Organization (BSCO), Matthew’s Trail reflects the power of community-led projects and the lasting impact of shared investment in Big Sky’s future.
