South Fork Loop Trail
South Fork Loop is a 1-mile dirt-surfaced trail located just off Aspen Leaf Drive, less than a mile from Big Sky Town Center. Named after the South Fork of the West Fork of the Gallatin River, this easy loop offers a quick and scenic option for walking, running, biking, or Nordic skiing.
The trail begins on an old logging road with a gradual climb before reaching a signed loop junction about a quarter mile in. From there, the route transitions into singletrack, winding through forest with glimpses of river and wetland meadow below. The loop eventually parallels the river before a short climb returns you to the junction.
Its varied width and gentle terrain make South Fork Loop a great beginner-friendly trail — ideal for aspiring mountain bikers, dog walks, or a short post-work lap. It also connects conveniently to the nearby Hummocks and Uplands trail systems, allowing users to extend their outing.
The loop is home to the Story Book Trail in partnership with the Big Sky Library, adding an interactive, family-friendly element to the experience.
Though close to town, this area is active wildlife habitat. Bear sightings have been reported — please recreate responsibly.
